Free art in 12 Miami Beach hotels Nov. 12 to Dec. 19: the artists, the hotels and addresses, and the $35,000 in prizes, after a record 228 artists applied.
Twelve artists will put new work inside 12 Miami Beach hotels for No Vacancy, Miami Beach, the city’s hotel art competition. The installations are on view from Thursday, Nov. 12, to Dec. 19, and the city’s map calls them free art exhibits.
This is the seventh edition. A record 228 artists applied, the city said in its announcement.
The money
Each of the 12 artists gets a $10,000 honorarium to make a work for an assigned hotel. Two of them will also win prizes, worth $35,000 between them:
- a $25,000 juried prize, chosen by a panel of art professionals
- a $10,000 public prize, presented by the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau
The artists were picked by a committee drawn from the city’s Art in Public Places Committee, its Cultural Arts Council and the Miami Beach Visitor and Convention Authority. The city’s Cultural Arts Council, the visitor authority and the visitors bureau fund the program.

What the works are
The city’s announcement describes each piece. A few of them:
- The Betsy: a video installation mapped onto the hotel’s glowing orb, with animation, glitching and ambient sound.
- Eden Roc: a knotted stainless steel exhaust pipe, about gas-powered machines and the environment.
- Hotel Croydon: a fictional collection of undersea relics in an Art Deco display cabinet.
- Sherry Frontenac: seven woven banners spelling A-M-E-R-I-C-A, in colors drawn from South American flags.
- International Inn: a sculptural grove of hand-built palms.
- Marriott Stanton: two large paintings about identity, displacement and an imagined Cuban landscape.
Several of the works take on South Florida’s plants, its coastline and change to the landscape.
What it means for you
- Go from Nov. 12. The works stay up through Dec. 19, so they span Art Week and Art Basel Miami Beach, Dec. 4-6.
- It is free, the city’s map says. Hotel lobbies and public areas keep their own hours, so it is worth checking with a hotel before a special trip.
- Plan a route. Four hotels are on Ocean Drive, from the 100 block to the 1400 block, and three more are on Collins Avenue in the 1500 to 1800 blocks. The other five are farther north.
- The public prize is the $10,000 one. The city had not said how the public vote works when we checked Saturday. We will add it when it does.
- Questions: the city’s Tourism and Culture Department is at 305-673-7577, and the program page is miamibeachfl.gov/no-vacancy.
