544,154 Miami-Dade ballots, 41.45% of voters, were in before Election Day. Polls open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday; Miami Beach also votes on the 1691 Michigan Ave. lease.
More than four in 10 Miami-Dade County voters had already cast a ballot before Election Day. The county’s unofficial count at 6:40 p.m. Monday showed 544,154 ballots, or 41.45% of the county’s 1,312,820 registered voters. Polls open at 7 a.m. Tuesday.
Miami Beach voters have one extra item on Tuesday’s ballot: a city referendum on the lease of city property at 1691 Michigan Ave.
How Miami-Dade voted before Tuesday
The figures come from the Miami-Dade County Supervisor of Elections, which publishes an unofficial voter count through its turnout tracker. They are ballots cast, not results.
By Monday evening the county had recorded:
- 354,257 ballots cast at early voting sites from Oct. 19 to Nov. 1
- 189,897 mail ballots returned
Early voting picked up over the two weeks. The first day, Monday, Oct. 19, brought 16,903 voters countywide. The last day, Sunday, Nov. 1, brought 40,343, the busiest of the 14 days.
By party, the county’s count of ballots cast so far was:
| Party | Early votes | Mail ballots | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Democratic | 124,013 | 81,131 | 205,144 |
| Republican | 134,184 | 56,598 | 190,782 |
| No party affiliation | 88,802 | 48,579 | 137,381 |
Smaller parties make up the remaining 10,847 ballots. The figures show who voted, not how they voted.
Miami Beach’s two early voting sites
Miami Beach City Hall took 7,439 early votes over the 14 days. The North Shore Branch Library on Collins Avenue took 6,630. Together that is 14,069 ballots, about 4% of the county’s early vote.
Any Miami-Dade voter could use any early voting site, so not every ballot cast in Miami Beach came from a Miami Beach resident. Both sites were busiest on the final day: 832 voters at City Hall and 764 at the library on Sunday, Nov. 1.
| Day | City Hall | North Shore Branch Library | Both sites |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monday, Oct. 19 | 470 | 368 | 838 |
| Friday, Oct. 30 | 784 | 677 | 1,461 |
| Saturday, Oct. 31 | 699 | 730 | 1,429 |
| Sunday, Nov. 1 | 832 | 764 | 1,596 |
| All 14 days | 7,439 | 6,630 | 14,069 |
What is on the Miami Beach ballot
The city’s official sample ballot (PDF) asks one question, “Two 20-year Lease Extension Options for City Property at 1691 Michigan Avenue.” It asks whether the city should amend its ground lease with RK Rivani LLC to:
- grant two 20-year extension options
- allow 47,000 square feet of new development above the existing garage
- guarantee $247,733,206.12 in base rent over the 40 years of the options
- raise the percentage rent from 2.5% to 3%
The City Commission approved the amendment subject to a majority vote of city voters. Our voting page has the full question and the resolutions. The rest of the ballot carries federal, state and county races and statewide questions.
Voting on Tuesday
Polls are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday. On Election Day you must vote at your assigned precinct, which is set by your home address, the Supervisor of Elections says. Early voting sites are closed. Look up your precinct with the county’s voter information tool or by calling 311.
Bring a current photo ID with your signature, such as a Florida driver’s license or ID card, a U.S. passport or a military ID. A voter whose eligibility cannot be confirmed votes a provisional ballot.
If you still have a mail ballot
A mail ballot must reach the elections office by 7 p.m. Tuesday. Mailing it now is a risk. The county’s vote-by-mail page says that on Election Day it can be returned in person before 7 p.m. at two places:
- the Supervisor of Elections office, 2700 NW 87th Ave., Doral
- the elections branch office in the lobby of the Stephen P. Clark Center, 111 NW First St., downtown Miami
Both are on the mainland. The Doral office is about 13 miles west of South Beach.
When results come in
The county says unofficial results start posting after 7 p.m. Tuesday. The Miami Beach City Clerk’s special election page says results on the city question will start posting at 7:15 p.m. Results stay unofficial until the county canvassing board certifies them.
What it means for you
- Vote at your own precinct from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, not at City Hall or the library.
- Do not mail a ballot now. Take it to Doral or the Stephen P. Clark Center before 7 p.m.
- Bring a photo ID that carries your signature.
- Plan for wet streets. A coastal flood advisory for coastal Miami-Dade runs until 7 p.m. Tuesday. See our flood page for tide times.
- No school Tuesday. It is a teacher planning day for Miami-Dade County Public Schools; see our schools page.
- Questions: the Supervisor of Elections is at 305-499-8683. City election questions go to the City Clerk’s office at 305-673-7411.
